Keaton Smith is a successful marketing professional living in New York City. Once her career and personal life implodes, she agrees to travel to Beaufort, North Carolina to help prepare her mother and uncle's childhood home for sale. After both grandparents, Townsend and Rebecca (Becks) Saint James, died under mysterious circumstances in 1976, no one has stepped foot in the home, which is now frozen in time. The story leaps back in time recalling Becks and Townsend's happy life together. Becks has enjoyed years of hosting fabulous dinner parties that not only offered great food but also featured well-crafted guest lists which created new friendships and even some romances. As she prepares the final dinner of the summer, Becks faces her most challenging situation. In the present day, Keaton begins to uncover clues as to what happened to the grandparents she never knew. Surrounded by a supportive group of women, an adorable ten-year-old who lives next door, and the boy's interesting and attractive father, Keaton starts to wonder whether her temporary stay in Beaufort should become permanent.
Author Kristy Woodson Harvey has surely made her historic seaside hometown of Beaufort proud with A Happier Life. This lovely, touching dual timeline story reflects the heartwarming Southern charm that is characteristic of all her books. The theme of finding your way in life through understanding the past is done so well here. Enjoy it.
