This complex story begins in 1975 in the small town of Monta Clare, Missouri, where two thirteen-years-olds, Joseph "Patch" Macauley and Saint Brown, forge a close friendship. Patch, known for his missing eye and assortment of eye patches, proudly embraces his uniqueness by likening himself to a pirate. Saint, an orphan being raised by her grandmother, has a passion for raising honeybees. When Patch witnesses his crush, Misty Meyer, being abducted in the woods, he bravely rushes to her rescue. While Misty manages to escape, it is Patch who ends up being taken captive. When everyone has given up searching for him, Saint never gives up. Her loyalty to Patch is unwavering. What follows is the discovery of a string of missing girls and the quest to uncover who is behind it all.
All the Colors of the Dark by Chris Whitaker crosses many genres including mystery, thriller, coming-of-age, family drama, historical fiction, serial crime, suspense and the pursuit of love. No wonder this book is over 600 pages. The rich characters and their situations will break your heart. It is best to go into this book not knowing much more than this. It is an epic story that spans 1975-2001 and Whitaker skillfully incorporates cultural references to enhance the storytelling. Upon completing the book, I found myself drained but very satisfied by the journey. Find time to read this one.
