If you are already a fan of Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Gamache series (this is Book #16) you are surely hooked. But if not, this is an excellent book to discover the series. While reading a series from the beginning gives you more insight to the characters and their backstories, Penny writes each book to stand on its own. If you have the time to start from Book #1, great. Just don’t miss All the Devils Are Here.
Armand Gamache and his wife Reine-Marie have traveled from their small Canadian town of Three Pines to Paris to await the birth of their new grandchild. The family has dinner with Armand's godfather, billionaire Stephen Horowitz. While walking home after dinner, a van runs down 93 year old Stephen in what is clearly an attempted murder. While Stephen is fighting for his life in the hospital, Armand and his entire family find themselves in the middle of a web of crime and corporate misdeeds that threaten them all. The sumptuous City of Lights becomes a backdrop to an intricate web of lies and intrigue that is very inventive. This is a fast-paced book that never has a dull moment. I enjoy Penny’s writing style and find these complex characters very appealing. While this is an exciting mystery/thriller, it is a story (and series) of relationships and love of family.
