Author Grady Green has received the best news: his new book made the New York Times bestseller list. He's eagerly waiting for his wife Abby to return from work so they can celebrate. Abby, an investigative journalist, has been receiving threats on her life recently. While Abby is driving home, Grady calls her with the good news, and she notices a woman lying on the road. She stops to assist and never returns home. A year later, Grady remains devastated by his wife's disappearance and is unable to write. His agent Kitty, who is also Abby's godmother, offers Grady the use of her cabin on Amberly, a small, isolated Scottish island, to regain his focus on writing. On the ferry to The Isle of Amberly, Grady believes he has spotted Abby. Shortly after his arrival, amidst insomnia and excessive drinking, strange and unsettling events begin to unfold.
Alice Feeney is a talented writer who has entertained me with her last four books. Her newest thriller, Beautiful Ugly has a lot going for it. It features a great setting, unreliable narration, and a clever premise. And unpredictable, holy-moly twists. While the book drags a little at the beginning and the plot ultimately goes a bit too far over the top, it was a satisfying read. Be sure to pay attention to the chapter titles, which are all perfect oxymorons.
Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
