Broken Country - a woman is torn between her husband and her first love, who has returned to town.

Writer: MicheleReaderMicheleReader

Living in the Dorset English countryside, Beth Johnson enjoys a happy marriage with Frank, a local farmer. It's 1968, and Beth has left her past behind after Gabriel Wolfe, the son of the town's wealthy residents, broke her heart. When Gabriel returns to town with his young son Leo, it doesn't take long for Beth's deeply buried feelings to resurface. The story shifts back to when Beth and Gabriel first met and the intense passion between the young couple. After her romance with Gabriel ended, the kind-hearted Frank, who had loved Beth since their school days, was there for her. Despite the tragic loss of their 9-year-old son Bobby in an accident, Frank and Beth remained devoted to each other. While grieving her son, Beth becomes close to Leo, who misses his mother. At the beginning of this emotionally stirring book, Beth, the narrator, reveals that someone has been killed. As the timeline shifts to 1969, a murder trial is underway. Initially, the reader is not informed of who is on trial or who was the victim, only identified as "the farmer."

Broken Country, beautifully written by Clare Leslie Hall, has many dimensions. It is a blend of historical fiction, romance, and a mystery, making it truly exceptional. The characters, particularly Beth, are complicated and flawed. They've made difficult choices and have to live with the consequences. While tugging at the heartstrings, this book also delivers surprising twists as the story unfolds. Don't miss reading it.
