Rachel Krall is a successful true-crime podcaster. With two days remaining before the release of Terrance Bailey from a Florida jail, the FBI seeks her help with a missing person's case. Bailey was incarcerated for breaking and entering but is also a suspected serial killer with no hard evidence to charge him with the crimes. Having had no previous visitors, social media influencer Maddison Logan saw Bailey, who asked her to contact Rachel. Maddison then disappeared. Rachel also visits Bailey, putting herself in danger. Why did Maddison visit him and why did he ask her to contact Rachel? And what is the connection to the ouroboros infinity symbol of a snake eating its own tail which keeps appearing throughout the investigation?
Dark Corners is author Megan Goldin's second book about Rachel Krall, a smart, appealing character. The Night Swim was the first in the series. This book can be read as a standalone but the first was very good and also worth reading. While the first book was all about true-crime podcasting, this book delves more into the world of influencers. Rachel goes incognito to BuzzCon, an influencer convention where Maddison had been registered and it's filled with quite a collection of ruthless people who are trying to translate their followers into fame and fortune. I would rate Book #1 a smidge higher than this one, but I still felt it was very good and recommend it. Goldin's 2022 book Stay Awake was also worthwhile.
Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
