The story begins at a college bar in the fall of 2000. Berkeley students Percy Marks and Joe Morrow meet and discuss music. Joe is an aspiring singer/songwriter, and Percy, who admits she lacks musical talent, loves to share her opinions on songs. Joe is so impressed by her insights that he asks for her opinion on a song he's written. And so, it begins. A friendship and possibly more. Percy moves to New York City for an MFA at Columbia, and Joe releases an album and tours. Joe wants Percy to help with his songs, but she isn't satisfied with simply being a behind-the-scenes muse. Throughout the decade, their paths intersect and diverge against the backdrop of the indie music scene. Will they find their way back together creatively or romantically, or has there been too much hurt along the way?
Deep Cuts is an impressive debut by author Holly Brickley, who captures the era and its settings, including San Francisco, LA, New York City, and Miami. Music plays a central role in the story, with references to indie artists of the period and the artists who influenced them. While the music and world events provide a sense of nostalgia, the relationship between Percy and Joe feels timeless. It has been reported that a movie adaptation is planned, starring Saoirse Ronan and Austin Butler. Good casting!
