Frankie is living in London. She's 84 years old and has been injured. Damian, a young man from Ireland, has been hired to provide her with in-home care. Their shared Irish heritage from the same town in County Cork might explain why Frankie warms to him and chooses to share her life story. It begins in the 1940s when Frankie, as a child, experiences a great loss. The only bright spot in her life is her friendship with Nora. After many years of hardship, Frankie eventually finds herself in New York City. It is the 1970s and a new love introduces her to the vibrant world of contemporary art. Over the decades, Frankie's journey includes disappointment, success, betrayal, friendship, and love. While reflecting on her life, Frankie recognizes how much she has impacted everyone around her.
I was unaware that Graham Norton, the Irish talk show host, comedian, and actor, was also an author. Frankie is his fifth novel. It's a beautifully written book that is both moving and witty. I was fully immersed as Frankie shared her life story with Damian. It is a tender tale that is worth a look.
(The U.S. book cover art is a bit confusing as it looks like an immigrant story from the early 1900s. Artwork reflecting the excitement of New York City in the 1970s and 1980s would have been more appropriate.)
