Look Closer - a superior thriller about obsession, lies and revenge with skillful twists and turns.

It is Halloween, 2022. Beautiful Lauren Betancourt is dead. Her body will soon be found in her large home in Grace Village, a wealthy suburb of Chicago. Back in May, law professor Simon Dobias, who lives in sister town Grace Park, learns that Lauren, his first love, has moved back to the area and he becomes obsessed. Through his journal, we learn that they start a passionate affair communicating through matching pink and green burner phones. At the same time, Simon’s wife Vicky Lanier is plotting to steal Simon’s $21 million inheritance. Vicky, who has a very mysterious background, seeks some creative financial advice from Christian Newsome and they begin an affair. Vicky has discovered Simon’s journal revealing his affair with Lauren. Everything leads up to the police investigation of Lauren’s murder. They know that someone in a Grim Reaper’s costume was at the house the night of the murder.

I have already made room on my “Best of 2022” list for Look Closer by David Ellis. It is an incredibly clever story that has so many layers that each time one is peeled away, it is a holy-cow moment. There is so much deviousness going on that it is impossible to know who is the hunter and who is the prey. Each twist and turn becomes more satisfying than the next. There’s a lot more going on in this exciting book than solving the murder of Lauren Betancourt. And you won’t figure it all out – so just enjoy the ride.

Many thanks to G.P. Putnam's Sons | Penguin Group for the opportunity to read this very entertaining book in advance of its release.
