Clove lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and two children. And she's living a lie. Her husband believes that her parents died in a car accident. When a letter arrives from her mother, who has been incarcerated for the murder of her father, Clove realizes that her charade can't last much longer. Clove (not her real name) and her mother Alma were both victims of domestic abuse. After her father's death, Clove fled from their home in Hawaii and assumed a new identity. With a more supportive environment for abused women, Alma begs her daughter to come and help her, as she can attest to the violence they endured. But Clove isn't ready to have her life unravel, especially with the impact the truth will have on her children. And her marriage.
Chelsea Bieker's Madwoman was at its strongest when it delved into the story of a damaged woman who is desperate to escape the haunting memories of her difficult, violent childhood. As it moved into thriller territory, the book went in a direction that felt a bit over the top leaving me conflicted on the overall read after being highly invested in it.
