More or Less Maddy - a powerful story of a young woman's mental illness diagnosis.

Writer: MicheleReaderMicheleReader

Life for Maddy Banks had been a relatively typical one. Raised in Connecticut, she had a back-and-forth relationship with a boyfriend and after graduation, she was excited to start fresh at NYU. Following a challenging freshman year, Maddy began taking an antidepressant. This was followed by a manic episode and a 72-hour psychiatric hold at the hospital, where she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This is Maddy's heart-wrenching journey through the initial stages of her new reality. Can she return to her previous life if she stays on her medication? Or does she need to change her path?

Neuroscientist and author Lisa Genova gives insight into a disorder that alters everything. It impacts how someone lives their life after being diagnosed and reshapes their relationships with family and friends. I believe that society lacks sufficient education on mental illness, leading to persistent stigma against those affected. More or Less Maddy is a compelling, emotional story that provides a valuable window into a disorder that impacts many people. The talented Genova has also explored autism, Alzheimer's, ALS, and other conditions that demand understanding and empathy.
