It's 2018 and Sally Milz is a sketch comedy writer for The Night Owls (think Saturday Night Live). Divorced, 36 and constantly surrounded by beautiful people, Sally knows she's smart and good at her job. But she perceives herself to be rather ordinary in looks and appeal. Sally can't help but notice the continued romantic pairings between the average, even dorky looking men on the show and gorgeous women. Upcoming host, musical guest, and incredibly good-looking Noah Brewster works with Sally to fine-tune his idea for a skit, and they have a connection which builds through the week. But Sally can't accept that someone like Noah would be interested in her. The story fast-forwards to July 2020 and the days of Covid quarantine when the pair gets to know one another through emails. Sally questions whether the two are simply engaging in "the romance of emailing" versus the "romance of romance".
Author Curtis Sittenfeld's Romantic Comedy is an entertaining book with snappy dialogue, lots of humor and heart. As a long-time fan of SNL, I found the first part of this three-part book especially fun as it showed the behind-the-scenes process of creating and fine-tuning the show before airtime. The cast of characters are all well done with Sally leading in appeal followed by Noah, who sees the real Sally. I'm happy to recommend this delightful book.
