It’s 1991, Charlie Jordan is a college student in a New Jersey college who lost her best friend and roommate to a serial killer. She bears a heavy sense of guilt as after having had an argument, she left Maddy alone in a bar the night she was killed. She decides to head home to Ohio to sort things out, much to the dismay of her boyfriend Robbie. She posts a flyer on campus hoping to share a ride and was happily contacted by Josh, a handsome janitor at the school who is heading to Ohio to tend to his sick father. Charlie is a film major and relates everything to her favorite movies – most are dark film noir classics with a musical thrown in. She oftentimes lapses into a dream state where she visualizes her real life as a movie and has trouble differentiating between the two. This condition makes her observations unreliable. While Charlie is in the car with Josh, she starts to wonder who this stranger truly is. Is she in danger? Or is she drifting into another movie in her mind?
Since this is a Riley Sager book, you can be assured that things are going to get twisty and crazy. And a little scary. So get ready to ride shotgun for this heck of a journey complete with wonderful film references and the Nirvana song Come As You Are playing on and on.
Do the actions of the characters make complete sense? No. But do foolish decisions make for a fun thriller? Yes. Yes. Yes. Just like in the movies. Read it, enjoy it and take notes. The movies mentioned are all great.
Rated 4.25 out of 5 stars.
