Natalie Taylor struggles to overcome her husband's betrayal and their divorce. Seeking an escape, she travels to Paris. There, she buys a book of letters from the early 1800s by Barbe-Nicole Clicquot written to her great-granddaughter, Anne. Natalie finds inspiration in these letters. Barbe-Nicole, who became a widow at a young age, took over her husband's champagne business and, against all odds, turned Veuve Clicquot into one of France's premier champagne houses without depending on a man. In the present, Natalie is befriended by Sophie, the concierge at the luxury hotel where she's staying, who mistakenly assumes she is a fellow widow, and Natalie doesn't correct her. With Sophie's help, Natalie gets a new look and catches the eye of Gabriel, a charming and successful Parisian businessman. This newfound attention is exactly what she needed.
The Champagne Letters is a wonderful debut by author Kate MacIntosh. Two alternating timelines, 19th-century Reims, France, and modern-day Paris provide captivating stories. Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, a real historical figure, overcame significant challenges, including those during Napoleon Bonaparte's reign. In Paris, Natalie encounters unforeseen challenges and obstacles that test her as she works to restore her confidence and gain strength. It makes for one sparking read.
