Camryn Lane, a caring school counselor, has survived a divorce, is successfully co-parenting her teenage daughter and even has a passionate younger boyfriend. She is living her best life as her debut novel, Burnt Orchid, has just been published. With strong early reviews, things are looking very good. That is until Camryn receives a vicious attack on a social network where readers discuss books. The poster accuses Camryn of exploiting her "vulnerable students" in her book. Camryn wants to defend herself, but her team of professionals assure her that this will pass. It doesn't. It goes from bad to worse. The comments escalate to threats and go beyond virtual. Who is behind all of this? There is a long list of people who could be to blame.
Robyn Harding, author of The Haters, has created quite a nightmare for her lead character. The tension builds and builds as the abuse continues. There are many credible suspects making this a well-done whodunit which kept me guessing. In addition to Camryn's ordeal, Harding also includes excerpts from Camryn's book Burnt Orchid. The topic of harassment and bullying is a timely one and this story serves as a powerful cautionary tale.
Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
