The Law of Innocence, Mickey Haller #6: a well-crafted legal thriller.

A Michael Connelly book is the perfect escape. My favorite is his Harry Bosch series (and the Amazon Prime TV series is pretty great too). I have also enjoyed the Mickey Haller series as well as the new Renée Ballard series. If you too have immersed yourself in this reading universe, you’ll be very happy with The Law of Innocence.

Mickey Haller goes out to celebrate another successful not guilt verdict and while returning home, he is stopped by the police. A dead body of a former client is found in the trunk of his car. The “Lincoln Lawyer” is charged with murder and sent to the Los Angeles Twin Towers Correctional Facility. Knowing he’s been framed, Mickey decides to defend himself and working from jail, puts together an impressive team to help him find out who is behind the murder, who set him up and how to clear his name in court. The team includes his half brother Harry Bosch and his two ex wives. With the most important case of his career, we see the skill of a great lawyer and the importance of a strong and loyal staff to help tackle the investigation.

We get a fascinating look behind the scenes of the justice system and a good courtroom drama. Connelly also weaves into the story the early days of COVID-19 when there was news about a virus in China to its emerging impact in the United States.

As with most series, it makes best sense to read from the beginning or read some of the earlier books but The Law of Innocence stands on its own if you choose to jump in here. This is a fast-paced, intelligent book from a master of crime thrillers. A must for fans of the series and a good introduction to the world of Michael Connelly.
