Molly Gray, known as Molly Maid, is twenty-five years old and is not your ordinary young woman. She is a sweet soul who has issues with social interaction. Molly takes everything at face value. She is unable to distinguish between honest comments and sarcasm. Her recently deceased grandmother had been helping her find her way and instilled high standards for etiquette and cleaning perfection, making her a great asset at her job at the upscale Regency Grand Hotel. Charles and Giselle Black are frequent guests and Molly is their regular maid. When Molly finds the wealthy Mr. Black dead in his bed, she gets caught in a web of lies and becomes a person of interest in his suspicious death. And who better to set up for the crime than Molly, who sees the best in everyone.
Author Nita Prose (pen name for Nita Pronovost, a successful literary editor) has created a lovely, entertaining, cozy mystery told with humor and compassion. It’s an Agatha Christie-esque murder mystery with a very appealing main character who has gone through life virtually invisible and is now the center of a high-profile investigation. In a light-hearted style, Prose addresses the importance of recognizing and appreciating everyone, even if they appear to be different.
Many thanks to Ballantine Books | Random House Publishing, NetGalley and the author for the opportunity to read The Maid in advance of its release. What an impressive debut novel! If this sounds like it would make a great movie, apparently Universal thought so too. A film version is in development.
