Liam Noone was a successful man who ran a group of upscale, boutique hotel resorts. While based in New York, he spent his final days at his California cottage, where he tragically died from a fall off the property's cliffs. Despite the police ruling the death an accident, Sam, one of Liam's two sons from his second marriage, knew in his gut that foul play was involved. He persuades his sister Nora, Liam's daughter from his first marriage, to go with him to California to try and uncover the truth. As Nora and Sam work to unravel the mystery of their father's death, the story goes back 50 years to when Liam meets and begins a lifelong relationship with a woman named Cory. Despite having been through three marriages and fathering three children, Liam kept a big part of his life hidden from his family, causing strain in all his relationships. While dealing with their grief, Nora and Sam are hoping to fill in the missing pieces of their father's puzzle so they can try and heal.
Although The Night We Lost Him by Laura Dave is presented as a mystery thriller, it is predominantly a family drama. The fact that Liam's death was not an accident is revealed up front and while the search for who caused his death was interesting, the true appeal of the book is the connection that develops between Nora and Sam. These siblings, who barely knew one another, seek a better understanding of their father. While not the thriller I had expected, I was moved by the story and shed some tears.
