Jim Doyle is a store security guard. He’s the type of person you wouldn’t notice. He goes to work, goes home to his wife and has an 18 year old daughter. One day he sees a new book in his store entitled, The Nothing Man: A Survivor’s Search for the Truth. The book is written by Eve Black. Eighteen years ago when Eve as twelve, her parents and sister were the final victims of a serial rapist and murderer. The killer has never been caught having cleverly left no clues and continues to be known simply as The Nothing Man. Eve is determined to be the one to finally uncover and catch him. But Jim already knows who has committed these heinous crimes. He is The Nothing Man.
This inventive book is told as a book within a book. We read Eve’s memoir retelling the grisly stories of each of The Nothing Man’s crimes. In present day, we read of Jim’s reaction to all the notoriety Eve’s book is getting. He buys the book and secretly reads it while reveling in his past crimes. But Jim soon discovers that Eve seems to have more insight into the murders than he believed anyone could have. What ensues is a tense and exciting cat and mouse game between a woman ready to get past her grief and avenge her family and a man who has enjoyed his anonymity and infamy but is starting to unravel.
I was hooked from the first page and couldn’t put this thrilling and suspenseful book down. Be sure to keep the lights on while reading.
