The story of a prosperous Black family in the Jim Crow South unfolds from 1911 to the 1940s. In St. Louis, Jordan Sable emerges as a leader by creating a union for railway coach cleaners. He later becomes the owner of a funeral business and a significant influencer of votes within the Black community, with white politicians acknowledging the need to gain his support. His wife Sarah, raised in South Carolina, was managing her own business when Jordan met and became captivated by her. Their lives, including those of their family members, are filled with triumphs and tragedy.
The Sable Cloak is a poignant and powerful book. It offers a fascinating insight into Black communities confronting racism, featuring people like Jordan and Sarah who were able to effect change. Sadly, author Gail Milissa Grant passed away in 2024. She leaves this impressive book, her fiction debut, as a tribute to her ancestors, who served as inspiration.
