Lucy Harper is a crime fiction author with a successful series about a detective, Eliza Grey. Eliza isn’t just a character in her novels, she’s been Lucy’s imaginary friend since childhood. Essentially her alter ego. In an effort to stop Eliza from being in her head, Lucy decides to write her out of her latest novel. Turns out Lucy has never healed from the disappearance of her younger brother when she was nine years old. “Eliza” has been directing many of Lucy’s actions and the telling of many lies. Was Lucy/Eliza responsible for brother Teddy’s disappearance in the woods behind her house?
In the present, Lucy’s husband Dan, a wannabe writer, serves as her assistant and took it upon himself to purchase a large home adjacent to the very woods where Teddy disappeared, much to Lucy’s shock and anger. When Dan disappears, the police and the media are watching Lucy’s every move. And Eliza has a lot to say to Lucy about what to do next.
To Tell You the Truth is an enjoyable, stay-up-all-night-to-finish book. I like unreliable narrators, which Lucy certainly is. Author Gilly Macmillan has delivered another clever book with characters who are not necessarily likable but will keep you guessing until the end.
Rated 4 out of 5 stars.
