Jason, Lucinda and their children Allison and Ethan are as normal a family as you’ll find. The children are at an age where they still do things together as a family. On a drive home from 15-year-old Allison’s field hockey game, the family is pulled off the road by two armed men in a pickup truck in what appears to be a horrible, wrong place, wrong time, carjacking. When the family dog jumps onto one of the men, gunshots fly with tragic results. And so begins the nightmare of the Bennett family.
With one of the assailants on the loose, the shell-shocked family has to enter the witness protection program forcing the Bennetts to quickly leave everything behind and move from Pennsylvania to Delaware. With no ability to communicate with anyone, they observe the rumor mill quickly escalating on social media. Some of their neighbors are accusing mild mannered Jason of murdering his family and going into hiding. A true-crime maven starts a citizen detective podcast. What Happened to the Bennetts is a book for today’s times as it shows how hard it is to be forced to disconnect from the world.
A crime syndicate responsible for drug-trafficking throughout the area appears to be at the root of the Bennetts' troubles. Not willing to sit and do nothing while frustrated with the seemingly slow actions of the FBI, Jason steps it up and does his own investigation. It may be a bit unrealistic when Jason Bennett becomes more like Jason Bourne, but once he did, I hung on tight and enjoyed this fast-moving mystery thriller rev up with some exciting action while never veering from the family’s heartbreaking situation. Lisa Scottoline, a favorite author of mine, has written an entertaining book that kept me on the edge of my seat while making me tear up at times.
