Three months after the marriage of renowned New York pediatric surgeon Richmond Dougherty to his second and much younger wife Addison, Richmond is dead. His first wife Kathryn, the police, and nearly everyone suspects Addison, who stands to inherit millions. Addison isn't mourning his death; her marriage was a sham orchestrated by her mother, who had a score to settle. But Addison didn't kill Richmond, whose death was initially believed to be an accident, and now she fears for her own life. She also wants to find out who killed her husband before she winds up in jail for his murder. As this twisty story unfolds, Richmond's past is revealed, and his past is quite a doozy.
What the Wife Knew by Darby Kane is an engaging slow-burn thriller filled with many despicable characters. Flashbacks provide insight into the lives of some very dysfunctional families. The book is over-the-top and a bit cringy but it's a worthwhile read.
